Can I use a higher HP drive with a smaller motor?
This is an article to answer the question whether or not to use a higher HP drive on a smaller motor.
The rule of thumb is that you should not size your VFD more than 2X the size of the motor.
Example:
If you have a 5HP motor, you could use a 5HP, 7.5HP or even a 10HP VFD to run the motor.
NOTE 1: Sizing a VFD more than 2X the motor size will decrease the control ability of the drive for proper operation.
NOTE 2: Always pay attention to the FLA of the motor and the application the motor is performing. (Normal Duty / Heavy Duty)
