How do I choose a Line Reactor for a VFD and what benefits does it provide?
This article describes how to select a line reactor for a VFD and explains the benefits of having one.
A line reactor is sized by the HP/Current of the Variable Frequency Drive and also the percentage of inductance needed.
NOTE: When using a PowerFlex 523/525/527, it is good practice to install a line reactor. The PowerFlex 753/755/755TS has a built in DC Choke which provides protection to the drive but an additional line reactor can be used.
A Line Reactor protects against spikes and surges, eliminate nuisance tripping, improves power factor and reduces harmonic distortion

Why is the right impedance rating important?
- 3% Impedance Rated Reactors to reduce nuisance trips and protect against voltage spikes
- 5% Impedance to reduce harmonic content
NOTE: Adding a line reactor does not meet the IEEE-519 Standard
